Soul Searching

Soul Searching is a sculptural vessel that highlights the contrast between the massive presence an elephant has and the delicate emotion that coexists. My rub-on rub-off glazing technique works to amplify the creases throughout the piece and to capture the inconsistencies along a real elephant’s skin. Through the creases along the ear, I aim to emphasize the expansive and sprawled out motion the ears follow to illustrate how layed back the elephant seems. The wrinkles along the forehead, as well as the bone structure implied by the eyebrows, work to compliment the calm, hopeful, and slightly joyful expression in the eyes. The trunk was built with various layered coils and suggests the cheerful movement of the elephant blowing its trunk.
